In the past, knowing which insurance company could give you the best deal on your car was a nightmarishly time-consuming process involving hundreds of hours spent in front of the computer screen trawling through all of the different policies that providers have to offer.
In many cases, people searching for cheaper premiums simply didn't have the time to make really informed choices about their policy provider and so ended up paying more than they needed to for their car insurance.
With the advent of new insurance comparison websites such as gocompare, and comparethemarket, much of the hassle that has dogged people when trying to find the best policy available to them has been removed. Car insurance comparison sites work like similar sites in different industries - taking the prices for similar products from different websites and displaying them in one place with the lowest prices first.
Now obviously a site that compares car insurance policies is going to be a little more complex than one giving you the best price on dog baskets, since the information needed to calculate an insurance quote is much more dynamic, and changes from customer to customer. With these kind of sites therefore, you first of all must fill in a form which covers all the varying aspects that might affect the price of your premiums. The comparison site then uses this information to get quotes from all the insurers partnered with them automatically, and returns a list of policies from insurers who best match your requirements.
This all serves to save you a lot of time, by allowing you to filter out all the most expensive quotes and concentrate on the ones that suit you in terms of price-range and coverage. To make even greater financial savings, you should consider using two or even three of these comparison sites and then comparing the best quotes from each of them.
Alternatively, you could take the best quotes you have received and go back to your current insurance provider and ask for a discount - you might be surprised at how flexible they can be when faced with the prospect of loosing you as a customer.
Whatever you choose to do, always remember to proceed with caution and read all the small print relating to a policy before putting your name on anything.
